History
Isfahan University of Technology (IUT) was founded in 1974 in Isfahan. Commenced its scholastic activities in 1977 with approximately 800 students in five departments, the university was established as the second campus of the Aryamehr University of Technology (nowadays known as Sharif University of Technology). Following the Islamic Revolution of Iran, it became an independent institute and, therefore, emerged as the Isfahan University of Technology. The educational and research system, and the campus architecture of the university were modeled after infamous American universities, peculiarly MIT.
Overview
The Isfahan University of Technology is a non-profit state-run university under the supervision of the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology. It was founded in 1974 and began its academic activities in 1977, with about 800 students in five departments. Now it is one of the leading universities and research centers in Iran in the fields of science, engineering, agriculture and natural resources. Today the enrollment has grown to more than 9700 in fourteen distinct departments offering B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. IUT graduates have been offered excellent opportunities to play the key roles in the rapidly changing economic and industrial environment.
The Isfahan University of Technology is located 22 Kilometers (15-minute drive) Northwest of Isfahan. IUT occupies an area of 2300 hectares of land at the foot of Seyyed Mohammad Mountain. Of this, 400 hectares area has been dedicated to the main campus. The main campus resembles a small town wherein all the educational and research buildings, modern dormitories for student housing, and the residential quarters for academic staff with semi-detached houses are located. IUT also offers a health service center, shopping stores, sports and recreation centers inside the campus.
One of the outstanding features of IUT is its proximity to Isfahan Science and Technology Town (ISTT). Isfahan Science and Technology Town, as a pioneering organization, is a combination of few Science Parks and Incubators in 520 ha of land. This proximity is considered a remarkable advantage for both ISTT and IUT. This will create the opportunity for IUT students, graduates, and faculty members to establish links with companies and industries in the region and build their own businesses. ISTT has been residing quite a number of tenant SMEs which were founded by IUT faculty members and graduates.
Ranking
In the latest academic ranking results published by Times Higher Education for 2020, IUT was ranked 601-800th in World University ranking, and 109th in Asian University Ranking categories.
According to the subject category of Times Higher Education 2020, IUT is:
- Ranked first in Iran for the fields of Agriculture, Forestry, Environmental, and Marine Sciences;
- Ranked 2nd in the country for Life Sciences;
- Ranked 3rd in the country for international outlook and industry income;
- Ranked 4th in the list of 40 Iranian universities;
According to the 2020 edition of US news ranking, Isfahan University of Technology was among the top 600 universities. In Iran, IUT was ranked fourth after Tehran University, Islamic Azad University complex, and the Sharif University of Technology.
The top four universities in Iran and among the top 600 universities in the world in this ranking are Tehran University with a score of 52.4 and world rank 405, Islamic Azad University complex with a score of 50.5 and world rank 545, Sharif University of Technology with a score of 45.8 and world rank 591, and Isfahan University of Technology with a score of 45.7 and world rank 595.
Institutions were evaluated based on their research performance and their ratings by members of the academic community from within the region and around the world.

The objective of the Isfahan University of Technology, as an institution of higher education, is chiefly to contribute to the education of the youth of the Islamic Republic of Iran. In subsequent phases, this university aims to accomplish a worldwide transfer of knowledge and technology and contribute to the advancement of knowledge globally.
With the long-term horizons of the government set towards promoting auspicious higher education, IUT has taken eminent actions in establishing M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in all fields of engineering, science, and agriculture for the purpose of attaining scientific self-sufficiency.The Isfahan University of Technology seeks excellence in all programs and activities.
